Apparently Fergie won't be involving any of the World Cup players in the first month of the season.

So that means Evra, Rooney, Carrick, Vidic and Hernandez. None of which have had particularly lengthy spells in the competition. Hernandez went the furthest but didn't feature all the way so I'd hope he'd be involved in the pre-season given that he's new and needs to blend in. As for the others, it remains to be seen whether or not Fergie does include them.

Owen targets US comeback

A hamstring injury sustained in February's Carling Cup final cut short Michael Owen's first season as a United player. Now, after surgery and months of rehabilitation, the striker says he's looking forward to lacing up his boots on United's pre-season tour.

Speaking at the launch of Sky Sports 1&2 on BT Vision, Owen revealed he's nearing full fitness.

"I'll be ready for the start of the season, although I might have to miss one or two pre-season games on the American tour," he said.

That news may come as a blow to fans in Toronto, where United kick off pre-season preparations on 16 July, but supporters in Philadelphia, Kansas City, Houston and Guadalajara (Mexico) will be hopeful of seeing Owen in action.

He's certainly making good progress and has worked hard over summer in order to make a full recovery from an injury that turned out far more serious than first thought.

"Basically, I tore my hamstring. It came apart. I had surgery to tie it back together and at this stage I'm not sprinting but I am kicking balls."

Tour squad announced!

Sir Alex will take a 22-man squad to America on Monday morning as the Reds jet off to begin their pre-season tour.

Experienced campaigners including Edwin van der Sar, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes will be joined by a host of younger squad members with the likes of Corry Evans, Ben Amos and Tom Cleverley included on the trip. New signing Javier Hernandez, who represented Mexico at the World Cup, will link up with his new team-mates in Houston on 27 July.

Captain Gary Neville will stay behind after suffering a calf injury in training. A club spokeswoman told ManUtd.com: "Gary has suffered a minor setback in training with a small tear to his calf muscle. He therefore won’t be going on the tour as it will be more beneficial for him to remain at Carrington to improve his chances of being ready for the start of the season."

From 12-30 July, Sir Alex's men will be visiting cities in America, Canada and Mexico. First stop is Chicago for a training camp, before the Reds' first match on Friday 16 July against Celtic in Toronto. The squad will then head to Philadelphia for a meeting with Philadelphia Union on Wednesday 21 July, before travelling to Kansas City to take on the Kansas City Wizards on 25 July. Next stop is Houston for a match against the MLS All-Stars, before the Reds end their trip with a visit to Guadalajara to take on Hernandez's former club Chivas on 30 July.

Travelling squad: Edwin van der Sar, Tomasz Kuszczak, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Dimitar Berbatov, John O'Shea, Wes Brown, Rafael, Jonny Evans, Darren Fletcher, Darron Gibson, Chris Smalling, Nani, Fabio, Federico Macheda, Danny Welbeck, Javier Hernandez (will join in Houston on 27 July), Mame Biram Diouf, Tom Cleverley, Ritchie De Laet, Corry Evans, Ben Amos, Gabriel Obertan.

First words that come to mind: Young squad!

only 4 days to play our first preseason game!

What names that are you excite to watch in this preseason?

for me:

cleverley (good player in the making)
berba (needs a good rpeseason)
smalling (lets see how good or not he is)
welbeck (needs to step up)
obertan (comon! now its the time to get into the regulars picked by fergie)
fabio (amidst so many injuries, he's a crackin player with bags of potential)
Macheda (I really think this season he has to become our main replacement for rooney)

Anyone have the capabilities of recording this or providing a full download?

I'd like to watch it in high quality and that's not likely with a stream of a pre-season game.

Sharpey, I'm also looking forward to seeing Cleverley in United colours in the pre-season as I saw a fair bit of him at Watford last season. On that note, an Arsenal youngster called Lansbury was also at Watford and he looked just as good, if not better.

I'm also looking forward to eventually seeing what Hernandez can really do alongside the rest of the team. Hoping Rafa features at right back as I want to see him in our starting eleven this season. Also hoping to see plenty of Corry Evans as I haven't seen as much of him as I'd have liked and I want to find out more.

Also I'm obviously hoping Macheda starts most, if not all, of our pre-season matches but I'm not all that excited about having to watch Welbeck again!

You know? Id love to see macheda and welbeck both starting most of the preseason games. Both are realistic options to be first teamers in the near future. I know you dont like welbeck, but if he improved his work ethic and his team spirit, usually two shortcomings in young players, he has immense potential.

Macheda I feel though, is a little further in his development, very close to be a real option for most of our games. He's a tough, clinical finisher and goal poacher of which we dont have any of the sort at this club. Big, big potential I feel, perhaps a new RVN? i hate to fall into the "new xx player" trap, but he looks a bit like Ruud, in terms of playing style.

Lansbury is more talented, but I feel cleverley has the right work ethic and attitude to become a better player. He'll need to take his chances though. At United you have to take your chances, its not like it was in the 90s and earlier, when fergie could give them plenty of opportunities, now its 4 or 5 chances, and if they dont impress, they're sold or let go.

Given his age, already loans, and trajectory, I think this is a huge preseason for cleverley and hopefully one he'll take. The most important thing is that he's conspicuous in any games he plays, that Fergie sees that he won't hide. If the kid shows personality, even if he isnt a fantastically accomplsihed player from the technical POV, Fergie will count on him for more games. But if he hides, then he'll go to the bench and eventually possibly loaned to another championship club.

Can't wait for proper football.
Really hoping Obertan is given a good chance and really shows us what he can do.

I want to see how Amos goes in pre-season. He is the best of the rest of the young keepers at the club that it is important he gets some chances to prove himself in pre-season.

Yeah V, I'm definitely looking forward to watching Amos. I think he could become a brilliant goalkeeper but, with Van der Sar and Kuszczak ahead of him, he's going to have to have a brilliant pre-season and likewise in the cup competitions. I think he could really give Kuszczak a run for his money to be our second keeper and that seemingly will lead to a good chance at the number one shirt in the near future.
